I wasn't even aware that there was some Hellboy animation in the works when I stumbled across Hellboy: Sword of Storms stored in my DVR (younger brother is always up on Cartoon Network happenings). IMHO it's way better than the theatrical movie. As far as I could tell, it's a totally new Hellboy story that deals with the typical Hellboy subject matter (occult and mystical type stuff - in this case, Japanese folklore). I'm not a big enough Hellboy head to determine whether these straight to DVD joints run with the comics, the movies or are a separate universe all together. If I had to bet, I'd say it's closer to the comic.
Mike Mignola's style was adapted pretty well for animation. It's not exactly the same of course, but it's close enough. The animation itself was solid. Fights were entertaining and in fact, surprisingly gory for a Toonami airing. There were also curse words (crap and damn). All good stuff. If you're into the animation process, this is kind of cool.
